Abstract

The purpose of the study was to analyze performances of the Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestling national team at European and world competitions from 1993 to 2020. Material and methods. To achieve the goal of the study, we carried out an analysis of scientific and methodological information and sources of the Internet, an analysis of official competition protocols with the help of mathematical statistics method. The performances of the athletes of the Ukrainian national team of Greco-Roman wrestling at the European Championships, World Championships and the Olympic Games among adults from 1993 to 2020 were analyzed. We calculated the number of medals earned, as well as the number of gold medals and the team's place in the medal standings. For a more detailed analysis, the competitions were combined into four-year Olympic cycles. The initial performance data was taken from the official website of the international wrestling federation “United World Wrestling” (unitedworldwrestling.org). Results and discussion. In the course of analysis of performances of the national team of Ukraine in Greco-Roman wrestling at competitions of European and world level since 1993, we found out that the most effective years were 1994, 1996 and 2015. It was alsobdetermined that the number of medals won at the European Championships reduced and only 5 medals have been won in the current Olympic cycle. At the world championships, there is a wave-like trend, the maximum number of medals won was 6 medals in the 1993-1996 Olympic cycle and 5 medals in the 2013-2016 Olympic cycle. Conclusion. Greco-Roman style wrestlers representing independent Ukraine have always claimed medals in the Olympics. In all Olympic cycles, except for two (2001-2004 and 2008-2012), they won medals. The best result of Ukrainian athletes was the 4th place at the 2004 Olympic Games. At the 2012 Olympics, four athletes took part at the competition, but the best result was the 8th place. At the moment, the national team of Ukraine has won two licenses at the 2019 World Cup. The wrestling team has every chance to replenish the number of licenses in tournaments during the first half of 2020. Prospects for further research will be directed to a comparative analysis of the performances of national teams in various types of sports.
